Start with example
Children copy what they see long before they follow what they are told. Praying on time yourself, where they can see you, is the first lesson.
When to start
The Prophet ﷺ instructed parents to teach children to pray at seven (Sunan Abi Dawud 495). Before that, let little ones join you on the mat, copy the movements and learn short surahs by hearing them.
Make it loved, not feared
- Give them their own small prayer mat.
- Praise effort, not perfection.
- Teach the meaning, not only the words. Our guides on wudu and salah are a good refresher for parents.
- Use a simple chart or streak so they can see their progress.
Screens at home
Set screen-free times around prayer and meals, keep devices out of bedrooms at night, and be consistent. It works best when the whole family follows the same rules, parents included. For your own phone, HayatTime's Focus Hub helps you model the habit you want your children to learn.
