How to make wudu (ablution) step by step

Wudu is the key to the prayer. It takes a couple of minutes, and every step has a purpose.

The command in the Quran

Allah says: "O you who have believed, when you rise to perform prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles" (Quran 5:6). These are the obligatory parts. The Sunnah adds the rest.

Step by step

  1. Intention in your heart to make wudu, and say Bismillah.
  2. Wash your hands up to the wrists, three times.
  3. Rinse your mouth three times.
  4. Rinse your nose, sniffing water in and blowing it out, three times.
  5. Wash your face from the hairline to the chin and ear to ear, three times.
  6. Wash your arms up to and including the elbows, right first, three times each.
  7. Wipe your head once with wet hands, front to back and back again.
  8. Wipe your ears inside and out.
  9. Wash your feet up to and including the ankles, right first, three times each, between the toes too.

What breaks wudu

Among the things that break wudu are using the bathroom, passing wind and deep sleep. When in doubt, renew it.
