Ramadan 2027: expected dates, meaning and how to prepare

Ramadan 1448 is expected to begin around 8 February 2027. Here is what to expect, and how to arrive ready rather than scrambling.

Expected dates for Ramadan 2027

The Islamic calendar is lunar, so Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year. Ramadan 1447 began in mid-February 2026; Ramadan 1448 is therefore expected to begin on or around Monday 8 February 2027.

  • First tarawih: expected the night of Sunday 7 February 2027
  • First fast: expected Monday 8 February 2027
  • Laylat al-Qadr is sought in the odd nights of the last ten, expected from around 27 February 2027
  • Eid al-Fitr: expected Tuesday 9 or Wednesday 10 March 2027

These dates are astronomical estimates. Your local mosque or national moon-sighting committee will confirm the start, and it can differ by a day between countries.

What Ramadan is

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and the month in which the Quran was first revealed. Fasting it is one of the five pillars of Islam. Allah says: “O you who have believed, fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become righteous” (Quran 2:183). From dawn (Fajr) until sunset (Maghrib), adult Muslims who are able abstain from food, drink and marital relations, and work harder on their prayer, their Quran and their character.

How to prepare, starting now

The best Ramadans are rarely the ones that start on day one. They start weeks earlier, with small habits that are already in place when the month arrives.

  1. Fix your prayers first. Ramadan is much easier if your five daily prayers are already on time. If Fajr is the hard one, deal with it now, not in the first week of fasting.
  2. Cut your screen time before the month, not during it. The biggest thief of Ramadan is the phone: the scroll between iftar and tarawih, and after suhoor. Decide now which apps you will limit.
  3. Set a realistic Quran goal. Finishing the whole Quran is a beautiful goal, but a consistent daily portion you actually keep beats an ambitious plan that collapses in week two.
  4. Try some voluntary fasts in Sha'ban. It gets your body used to fasting and follows the practice of the Prophet ﷺ, who fasted much of Sha'ban.
  5. Plan your Zakat. Many people pay Zakat in Ramadan. See our guide to calculating Zakat.

Protecting your Ramadan from your phone

HayatTime was built for exactly this. Salah Mode pauses your distracting apps at every prayer time, Downtime keeps them quiet at night so you actually sleep before suhoor, and the Fajr Alarm makes sure you are up for suhoor and Fajr. Your prayer times follow the moon and your location automatically.
